May - The Month of Mary
The month of May has traditionally been dedicated to Mary in
many cultures. May is considered the season of the
beginning of new life. Mary and the month of May were greeted,
welcomed and celebrated on specific days in May. Later,
the entire month of May became the month of Mary. A
Catholic tradition that became popular in the United States is
a MAY CROWNING which occurs during the month of May every
year. It is a special way we honor Our Blessed Mother. A
statue or likeness of Mary is ceremonially crowned and honored
with a wreath of blossoms. The ceremony usually takes place in
the context of parish devotion outside of the liturgy. The
crown of blossoms signifies she is Queen of Heaven and the
Mother of God. It also indicates Mary's virtues, virtues
that are to be imitated by the faithful.
Ways to Celebrate Mary's Month
The important thing is that Mary be honored in a special way.
There are many ways to celebrate our devotion to Mary. One way
is a daily recitation of the rosary. Another widespread
celebration during the month of May is to set up a small
Marian altar in your home. You could also pray other Marian
prayers such as the Hail, Holy Queen and the Memorare and by
singing Marian hymns such as "Immaculate Mary" and the "Regina
Caeli." The best way to honor Mary is to obey her Son.
It's interesting that Mary's last recorded words in Scripture
are, "Do whatever he tells you," (Jn 2:5) which were her
instructions to the wedding servers at Cana. These apply to us
as well. What Mary desires more than anything else is that all
people find salvation in her Son, Jesus Christ. Therefore,
when we listen to her Son and obey him, this pleases Mary.
